Nickolas “Nick” Schulenberg is an associate attorney on Freeman & Fuson’s criminal defense team. He came to this work to help people through some of the hardest stretches of their lives and to remind them that one mistake does not define them. He has represented hundreds of clients in 22 Tennessee counties, and his practice covers criminal defense, juvenile matters, and orders of protection along with evictions and breach of contract cases.

Nick is a Nashville native. He earned his B.A. in Political Science and Psychology, with a minor in Philosophy, from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his J.D. from Belmont University College of Law, where he finished in the top third of his class, received the Bruin Scholarship, and served as associate editor of the Criminal Law Journal.

Nick interned with the Rutherford County District Attorney’s Office in 2016 and spent 2017 to 2019 at a Nashville criminal defense and family law firm. He was licensed in Tennessee in 2019 and worked as an associate at Lannom & Williams in Wilson County. There, he helped defend a client in a homicide case and assisted with a motion for a new trial, which the court granted. He joined Freeman & Fuson in 2021 to broaden his practice and help more people. He is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association and the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Nick’s father, who died in 2023, devoted his life to helping others, and his example still shapes how Nick approaches his work. Nick’s older brother became a lawyer 4 years before he did and is now a partner at Hall and Associates. Nick is also a reluctantly avid fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and the Titans.
